February is National Children’s Dental Health Month, and this year’s theme is “Brush, Floss, Smile!” Dr. Jesse Jenkins and our friendly team at Five Parks Dental in Arvada invite you to celebrate with us! The American Dental Association (ADA) started National Children’s Dental Health Month to raise awareness about the importance of children’s oral health and wellness. Awareness and education include tips and tricks for good oral hygiene, at-home dental care, nutrition, healthy habits, and more.
Our oral health is directly linked to our general wellness, so when you have strong, problem-free teeth and gums, you’re more likely to avoid health issues like heart disease and diabetes. When your child has healthy teeth and gums, they’re more apt to do well in school and social circles. At Five Parks Dental, we believe in establishing good oral health early in life to help kids grow into healthy, happy adults.
Get Ready to Brush, Floss, and Smile!
Caring for your child’s smile means more than taking them to the dentist every six months. We encourage young patients and their parents to do the following:
- Brush twice daily with a soft-bristled toothbrush with a tiny smear of fluoride toothpaste, depending on the child’s age.
- Floss between teeth at least once a day.
- Clean your child’s gums with a damp washcloth if their teeth haven’t yet emerged.
- Rinse with an age-appropriate mouthwash.
Other tips for sustained oral health include:
- Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and wash away bacteria from the mouth.
- Eat tooth-healthy foods like carrots, apples, and celery.
- Avoid prolonged habits like thumb-sucking and pacifier use.
- Never use your teeth as tools to open packages or untwist bottles.
For additional activities and oral health tips, you can visit the ADA website or call our Arvada dental office.
