It's the tastiest time of the year! The holidays bring a host of delicious foods and treats with them, but are your food choices making the naughty or the nice list? Let's find out!

The Naughty List

We'll start with the bad news. Foods on the naughty list. Here are some of the culprits that can wreak havoc with your smile:

  • Cookies and other treats
  • Candy canes and other holiday candies
  • Egg nog
  • Hot cocoa

It's also important to note that many alcoholic holiday beverages contain a lot of sugar. Drinks like red wine can also cause tooth stains and discoloration. Awareness of these foods and drinks can help protect your smile's health and brightness.

The Nice List

While there are quite a few foods to avoid during the holiday season, the good news is that there are also plenty you can still enjoy! Here are some foods to love this holiday season:

  • Nuts
  • Cheese
  • Fruits and veggies

These items help increase your saliva flow, a natural protectant for your teeth. In addition, fruits and veggies actually neutralize the acids in your mouth that cause tooth decay, protecting you from developing cavities.

Moderation Is the Key to a Happy and Healthy Holiday Season

You don't have to avoid "naughty" foods and beverages completely; instead, enjoy them in moderation. Brushing 30 minutes or later after consuming them will also help protect your teeth from developing cavities. Awareness of the culprits is half the battle and will help you make wise choices for your teeth, smile, and general health this holiday season.
