Your temporomandibular joints (TMJ) are the most complicated joints in your body. They're responsible for the movement of your jaw and mouth, allowing you to laugh, talk, eat, chew, and yawn. When these joints aren't functioning correctly, it can result in a painful disorder known as temporomandibular joint disorder or TMD.

TMD can be quite debilitating for some patients causing warning signs and symptoms like:

  • A painful jaw joint or TMJ
  • Tenderness or discomfort when biting or chewing
  • Pain when opening or closing your jaw
  • Popping or clicking of the jaw joint
  • Jaw locking open or closed
  • Chronic headaches, including migraines
  • Tinnitus, or ringing in the ears

Patients may experience one or a combination of these symptoms.

Treating TMD

The good news is that your Arvada dentist can help you find TMJ pain relief! Dr. Jesse Jenkins has experience helping her patients reclaim their lives with TMJ treatment in Arvada, CO.

First, she performs a thorough examination using digital x-rays to study your teeth and how your bite functions, which helps her determine the root cause of your TMD. Once we get to the bottom of what's causing your TMD, Dr. Jenkins can recommend the proper treatment to alleviate your discomfort.

Some of the procedures she may recommend for you could include:

  • Relaxation therapies like yoga or meditation help reduce stress
  • Splint therapies or mouth guards
  • Occlusal equilibration, or bite adjustment
  • Medications for anti-inflammatories
  • Physical therapy
  • Trigger point therapy
  • BOTOX® injections to alleviate headaches and minimize pain

What Causes TMD?

The cause of TMD varies for each patient, but bite misalignment is a contributing factor for some people. Bruxism, or teeth grinding, is another contributor to TMD pain. Trauma or injury can also be a factor in contributing to TMJ pain.
