Will SureSmile® affect my speech?

Orthodontic treatment with SureSmile® clear aligners, while transformative, can temporarily affect speech. This only requires a short adjustment period. Although SureSmile's aligners are custom-made from smooth plastic and designed for significantly greater comfort than traditional braces, they sometimes temporarily affect tongue positioning during speech.

How Might SureSmile Aligners Affect Speech?

The fairly brief adjustment period can briefly impact pronunciation, especially of sounds that call for specific air flow and mouth or tongue positioning. However, as your mouth adapts to the aligners, your speech should pretty quickly return to normal. In most cases, this happens within a week.

To speed up the process, we recommend patients practice speaking while first wearing clear aligners to help their mouths get used to their presence.

The bottom line is, you may experience early speech challenges with SureSmile clear aligners. However, these challenges are typically minor and short-lived, and a worthwhile price to pay for a beautiful, properly aligned smile and bite.
