Estimates suggest that more than 10 million Americans suffer from head, jaw, or neck pain caused by jaw disorders. Many of these issues are attributed to problems with the temporomandibular joint, or TMJ.

The TMJ is the joint that connects the lower jaw to the skull and enables movement of the jaw. Issues with the TMJ are typically the result of misalignment among the joint, the teeth, and facial muscles.

What Are the Main Causes of TMJ Disorder?

There are several factors that can contribute to TMJ disorder. Some of the most common of these are:

  • Bruxism – This is the excessive grinding or clenching of the teeth, which places excess pressure on the TMJ.
  • Arthritis – This condition causes inflammation and damage to all joints, including the TMJ.
  • Trauma or injury to the jaw, head, or neck
  • Misaligned bite – Misalignment between upper and lower teeth can place excess pressure on the TMJ.
  • Stress – Stress can cause frequent and prolonged clenching of the jaw muscles and teeth, which can lead to TMJ pain.
  • Connective tissue disorders – Disorders like Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and Marfan syndrome can damage the connective tissue in the TMJ.
  • Poor posture – Poor posture puts excess pressure on the neck and jaw muscles and can lead to TMJ issues.

What Are Some Common Symptoms of TMJ

Improper TMJ function can manifest in a number of physical symptoms. Some of the most common include:

  • Soreness in the muscles and joints of the jaw
  • Clicking or popping in the jaw when opening or closing the mouth
  • Difficulty moving the jaw or biting or “locking jaw”
  • Wear and tear to the surfaces of the teeth, which can erode the enamel and expose the softer layer of the tooth underneath
  • Sensitivity in the teeth to hot and cold temperatures or brushing
  • Dental crowns or bridges coming loose or breaking
  • Headaches
  • Persistent ringing in the ears
